Another awesome week in Australian politics :))))

It feels like Anthony Albanese has completely fallen off the wagon in the last couple of weeks, first with his inhumane handling of the so-called “ISIS brides” situation and then yesterday with his description of activist Grace Tame as “difficult” in a quick-fire game of word association on stage at Murdoch press event. It’s not as though we didn’t already think he was an absolute worm, but it’s now as though he’s trying to take the piss - his new-found desperation for even a sliver of right-wing validation is as cringey as it is disappointing.

There’s been no shortage of things to feel enraged about lately, and it’s easy for it to become paralysing, but we’re doing our best at Cheek HQ to channel it into something productive.

And for a little Friday morning treat, here is a small collection of GOOD things to keep your spirits up this week:

  • Journalist and activist Sherele Moody (of Australian Femicide Watch) has completed work on Stacey’s Sanctuary, a one-bedroom apartment that she purchased in September with the sole purpose of serving as transitional accommodation for domestic violence survivors. Much of this important project has been funded by donations!!

  • Bad Bunny has landed in Australia!!!

  • For Sydney-based friends, we are in the thick of Mardi Gras season (i.e. gay Christmas) and there is no better excuse to go out and celebrate queer joy with fellow community & allies <3 (I also encourage anyone anywhere to draw on this energy!!!)

  • Australia wrapped up its best ever Winter Olympics, bringing home 6 medals (including 3 golds!) at the Milano Cortino Games - and the Paralympics is still to come!

Happy reading :)
