Queensland's chilling new hate speech laws, plus Hannah takes on Oxford

Cheek's recap on the week that was.

Hello! Another week of nightmares, but I truly hope that you are still finding the small moments of joy in between the horrors.

This week has been a bit of a weird one for me. With Hannah running around the country for panel talks last week, and now jetting off to the UK for her Big Oxford Debate™ (more on that in a moment), most of my time has been spent trapped in my little home office, eyes glued to live news updates as things go from bad to worse.

It’s been harder to escape the misery of the news cycle without a companion to bounce ideas, swap gossip and crack jokes with, though my dog does her best to be a good stand-in.

The reason that Hannah has abandoned me, as you will likely know by now, is that she has been invited to participate in a highly prestigious and very impressive debate at the Oxford Union. It is a very big deal!!

The proposition is about ending the private ownership of social media companies - i.e. ‘This house would end the private ownership of social media companies’. Hannah, as she has briefly spoken to, will be arguing for the opposition.

The big event is at 8:30pm on Thursday in Oxford, which, if you’re in Sydney, is about 30 minutes after this email hits your inbox. If debates are your kind of thing, or like me, you’re just nosey, you can tune in via the Oxford Union’s YouTube page.
