I can only congratulate you Hannah on your very thoughtful and insightful analysis - not just because your thoughts accord with mine, but because I am a 70 year old and these results and the decided lead that young people like yourself have taken to lift this country back into its progressive and social ideals have lifted my hopes immeasurably!! Onward and upward!
I definitely agree with how younger voters and thinkers are stepping into the media and conversations space. I'm 52, and I've been waiting for this bigger shift for a long time.
It's important to recognise that there are still a large number of younger people who are not engaged or who care about the bigger world around them as they don't really see the relevance of it to their own lives (I use my large family and family friends network as a yardstick of what the "average Jo Blo" is saying and thinking). We need to bring as many along the journey as we can (we won't bring everyone. That's fine. We really want "just enough to make change".).
Keep up the interesting and challenging conversations. There are many people with you, of all ages, genders, ethnicity and backgrounds 🤩💚
What Albanese does next is the question. Words and sentiment are always good, and I would like to think the result will embolden some substantive reform. This is a generational opportunity - I’m optimistic it’s possible, but also cautious. Jobseeker must be increased / indexed better, and bring back the CES (showing my age). Yes, we are an economy, but also a society. Economies don’t exist without us. Put people first, the rest will follow.
Having experienced many more electoral disappointments than Hannah I cannot share the same optimism about the prospects of the Labor government implementing a progressive agenda. But I share the hope and the minor parties and independents will have a big role to play. Unfortunately while Oz remains connected at the hip to the USA real progressive change is extremely unlikely.
